Reef Test Kits: Which Parameters Actually Matter and How Often to Check Them

New reef keepers often buy every test kit on the shelf and then test everything every day, which is a fast way to burn through reagents and second-guess a tank that was actually fine. The better approach is knowing which parameters drive coral health, which ones drift slowly, and which ones only need checking when something looks off.
The parameters that actually matter
For a coral tank with any amount of stony coral, five numbers do most of the work: alkalinity (KH), calcium, magnesium, nitrate and phosphate. Everything else, from pH to salinity to trace elements, either follows these or matters far less for day to day stability.
Alkalinity (KH)
KH is the parameter that moves fastest and causes the most trouble when it swings. Stony corals pull carbonate out of the water constantly to build skeleton, and if KH drops too far or bounces around, growth stalls and tissue can recede at the base. Most reef keepers aim for somewhere between 7 and 9 dKH and, more importantly, keep it consistent week to week rather than chasing an exact number. A simple titration kit like API KH is fine for a fishbowl or lightly stocked mixed reef, but once you are running a coral-dense system, the finer resolution and repeatable colour endpoint of something like the Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro test kit makes it much easier to spot a slow downward trend before it becomes a crash.
Calcium and magnesium
Calcium and magnesium work as a pair. Magnesium sits around 1250 to 1350 ppm in natural seawater and acts almost like a buffer that keeps calcium and alkalinity from precipitating out of solution together. If magnesium drops too low, you will find it becomes very hard to hold KH and calcium stable no matter how much dosing you do, because the two are reacting with each other instead of staying in solution for the corals to use. Nitrate and phosphate
These two get treated as nuisance numbers but they are actually coral food, in the right amount. Ultra-low nitrate and phosphate starve corals of colour and can trigger bleaching-like paling even with good lighting. Most SPS-dominant systems do best with nitrate somewhere around 2 to 10 ppm and phosphate around 0.03 to 0.1 ppm, softer corals tolerate a wider range. How often to test at each stage
A brand new tank, still cycling or under six months old, should have KH, calcium and magnesium tested two to three times a week. New systems swing hard because there is no buffer of established rock, sand and coral biomass to smooth things out, and dosing regimes are often still being tuned.
A tank between six months and two years old, with a stable dosing routine, usually only needs KH checked weekly and calcium and magnesium checked fortnightly. Nitrate and phosphate can be checked weekly if you are chasing a specific target, or fortnightly once you know your tank's baseline.
A mature tank, three years plus, with consistent stocking and feeding, can often move to fortnightly KH and monthly calcium and magnesium checks, tightening up again only after any big change such as new lighting, a large coral purchase, or a filter sock or media swap. Keep a written log, even a simple notebook by the tank. A single reading tells you almost nothing, but four weeks of readings tells you whether your dosing is actually matched to your coral load or whether you are slowly trending in one direction. Reagents also expire and degrade with heat, so replace kits roughly every 12 months even if there is liquid left in the bottle.
