Gallery Aquatica is a reef and freshwater aquarium store in Tingalpa, about fifteen minutes east of the Brisbane CBD on Wynnum Road. We are open seven days. You can walk in and look at coral in person before you buy it, which is still the best way to choose a piece, or order online and have it sent anywhere we can ship to in Australia.

Getting here
Tingalpa sits on the eastern side of Brisbane, on the stretch of Wynnum Road between Cannon Hill and Hemmant. Coming from the city, Wynnum Road runs out to us in more or less a straight line through Norman Park and Morningside. Coming from the south, the north or the airport, the Gateway Motorway crosses Wynnum Road a couple of minutes west of the shop.
That puts us within a short drive of Cannon Hill, Murarrie, Hemmant, Carina, Carindale, Belmont, Wakerley, Gumdale and Chandler, and of the bayside suburbs further out along the same road: Wynnum, Wynnum West, Manly and Lota. Capalaba and the wider Redlands are a little past that, still an easy run. If you are coming from the north side, allow for the river crossing rather than the map distance.
The address carries a unit number, 59, so it is worth having that with you when you arrive rather than just the street number.
Coral, in person
Photographs only tell you so much. Colour shifts under different lighting, and a frag that looks one way on a screen can look quite different sitting under your own fixture. Coming in and picking the actual piece solves that.
In store and online you will find SPS coral, LPS coral, soft coral and zoanthids, or browse all the coral for sale in one place. Within the SPS side there are dedicated Acropora and Montipora listings. If you want to see the exact colony before you commit, our WYSIWYG SPS and WYSIWYG LPS listings are photographed as the individual piece you receive. Mushroom coral is listed by genus rather than by the word mushroom, so there is a separate mushroom coral page covering the Ricordea, Rhodactis and Discosoma we have in. What is a coral frag?
A frag is short for fragment. It is a small piece cut from a larger parent colony and mounted on a plug or tile, where it heals over and starts growing as a colony of its own. Corals do this naturally when a storm breaks a branch off and the piece settles somewhere else, so propagating them by hand is really just a controlled version of something that already happens on the reef.
Frags are how most people stock a reef tank now, for three reasons. They cost a fraction of what a full colony costs, so a mistake is a cheaper lesson. They are small enough that you can arrange a scape properly instead of working around one large piece. And because they come from tank-raised parent colonies rather than the wild, they are already used to aquarium lighting and water chemistry, which usually means a shorter sulk after you introduce them.
The trade-off is time. A frag is a starting point, not a finished display. Depending on the species and your conditions, expect months before an SPS frag looks like a colony, and be prepared for it to lose colour for a week or two while it settles into your lighting.
Worth knowing what to look for. A healthy frag has started to encrust onto its plug, with tissue growing over the cut edge rather than a raw margin, and shows no bare skeleton or receding tissue at the base. A cut made the same day it goes on sale is still an open wound, so give any new frag a dip and a quiet spot in low flow while it closes up.
