Ceramic Frag Tiles and Plugs: Choosing the Right Base for Every Coral Shape

A frag is only as stable as what it's glued to. Ceramic tiles and plugs give coral tissue a hard, inert surface to bond onto, and choosing the right shape for the coral you're cutting makes the difference between a frag that heals cleanly and one that keeps sliding off its base for weeks.

Why ceramic over plastic

Ceramic is porous, pH neutral, and heavy enough to sit still in moderate flow without a plug stand. Coralline algae and encrusting tissue grip fired clay far better than they grip smooth plastic, so tiles tend to look established faster and hold frags more securely once tissue starts spreading across the surface. They're also reef safe long term, since there's no resin or dye leaching into the water column.

Matching tile shape to growth form

Not every coral wants the same base. Branching corals like Acropora, Montipora digitata, or hammer coral heads benefit from a stemmed tile, something like the square frag tiles with stem we carry, because the raised stem lifts the frag off the substrate and keeps the branch tip clear of detritus and snail traffic while the base callus forms. The stem also gives you something to grip with tongs during dipping or moving, without touching the coral itself.

Encrusting and flat growth forms are a different story. Montipora capricornis plates, Ricordea, zoanthids, and encrusting Acropora do better on a flat surface they can spread across in all directions. This is where a large round flat ceramic tile earns its keep. The flat profile lets tissue grow outward evenly instead of being forced into a single stem-shaped footprint, which matters if you're growing out a colony rather than just holding a single head.

Gluing frags without losing them to the sump

Dry the frag's base with a paper towel for a few seconds before gluing. Wet skeleton doesn't bond well to cyanoacrylate. Apply a small bead of gel-type super glue or a two part epoxy putty to the tile, press the frag into it, and hold for ten to fifteen seconds until it grabs. For branching pieces on a stemmed tile, angle the branch slightly so flow will hit the growing tip rather than the base. Once placed, leave the frag undisturbed in low to moderate flow for the first week. Curing too fast under strong flow is one of the most common reasons new frags detach.

Using hospital tiles for problem colonies

Round ceramic tiles aren't only for propagation. A dedicated hospital tile, such as the 7cm round tile sized for smaller specimens, gives you a clean, portable base to rehouse a struggling coral onto while you treat it. If a Ricordea colony is showing signs of stress, bleaching, or possible pest activity, moving it onto its own tile lets you isolate that colony in a separate container or quarantine tank without disturbing the rest of your display. It also makes dipping far easier, since you can lift the whole tile out rather than trying to pry a stressed animal off rockwork.

The larger flat round tile serves the same purpose for bigger LPS or soft coral colonies that need isolating during a health check. Because the tile is flat and stable, it sits securely inside a bucket or small quarantine vessel during dips, which reduces additional handling stress on tissue that's already compromised.

A few practical notes

  • Rinse new ceramic tiles under fresh water before use to remove any dust from firing.
  • Keep a mix of stemmed and flat tiles on hand, since most reef tanks eventually hold both branching and encrusting species.
  • Label frag racks by tile shape if you're running a large propagation system, it speeds up stocktakes.
