Aquarium Supplies on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is the closest city to us that we do not have a shop in, about an hour down the motorway from our Tingalpa store in Brisbane. Same state, same power, same freight network, so the whole dry-goods range and the full livestock side both come to you. The local water has two features worth knowing about, and one of them catches people out.

What Gold Coast tap water means for your tank

Gold Coast water, supplied by Seqwater, is very soft. Hardness sits down around 34 milligrams per litre with low total dissolved solids, which is some of the softest mains water in South East Queensland. Two things stand out for a fishkeeper. The pH runs low, around 6.2, which is on the acidic side, and the supply is disinfected with chloramine rather than plain chlorine.

Chloramine is the one to plan for. It does not gas off if you leave a bucket to stand the way plain chlorine does, and a basic dechlorinator is not always enough, so you want a conditioner rated specifically for chloramine, or catalytic carbon in an RO/DI line that is made to handle it. On the plus side, soft, low-mineral water suits planted tanks, shrimp and soft-water community fish beautifully. The flip side is that soft, low-buffer water gives you little to hold pH steady, so a reef tank or any hard-water species needs minerals and alkalinity built back up rather than stripped down.

Your source water can change without warning

This is the part that explains a lot of confused test results. Most Gold Coast water comes from Hinze and Little Nerang dams and is treated at Molendinar or Mudgeeraba. But the coast is plumbed into the SEQ Water Grid, a regional network of twelve major dams, thirty one conventional treatment plants and dozens of reservoirs and pump stations, and the grid can move water around as conditions require.

In practice that means two other sources can reach your tap. The desalination plant at Tugun, running since 2009, produces reverse-osmosis water that can be pumped to the Robina Reservoir at Clover Hill and blended with dam water. And parts of the Gold Coast can be supplied from Wivenhoe and Somerset via the Mt Crosby plants and the Southern Regional Pipeline. Desalinated water and dam water do not have the same mineral signature, and neither does Brisbane River supply. So a TDS reading that shifts when nothing has changed at your end is not necessarily your meter playing up or your resin failing. Test your fill water before a large water change rather than trusting a figure you took months ago, and if you are running an RO/DI unit, watch the inlet TDS rather than only the output.
