RO/DI Filtration: Why Top-Up Water Needs Carbon Blocks and Resin Before It Ever Touches Your Tank

Tap water is not reef safe, and in most cases it is not planted-tank safe either. Brisbane and regional Queensland supplies vary in chlorine or chloramine dosing, phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors, silica, and dissolved metals depending on the treatment plant and season. None of that shows up when you look at a glass of water, but it shows up fast in a marine system as algae blooms, skimmer overflow, or stalled coral growth. A reverse osmosis and deionisation unit, usually just called RO/DI, is the standard way to strip all of that out before the water ever reaches a sump or top-up reservoir.

An RO/DI unit is not one filter, it is a train of stages, and each stage has a specific job. Skipping or ignoring any one of them shortens the life of the next.

Sediment and carbon come first

Before water reaches the membrane, it passes through a sediment filter to catch grit and rust particles, then a carbon block. Carbon block media is denser and more consistent than loose granular activated carbon, so it removes chlorine and chloramine more thoroughly and also pulls out a good amount of dissolved organics and some heavy metals. This matters because chlorine will chemically attack the thin-film membrane inside an RO housing and shorten its working life dramatically. A tired or bypassed carbon stage is one of the most common reasons an RO membrane fails early.

The membrane does the heavy lifting

Once water is dechlorinated, it passes through the RO membrane itself, which rejects the majority of dissolved solids, including calcium, magnesium, nitrate, phosphate and silica, based on pressure forcing water through a semi-permeable layer. This is where total dissolved solids drop from whatever the tap reads, often 40 to 150 ppm in southeast Queensland, down to single digits.

Deionisation resin polishes what is left

RO membranes are good but not perfect, so a final DI stage is used to mop up the last trace of dissolved ions. This is where colour-changing resin becomes genuinely useful rather than just convenient. Rather than guessing when to replace the cartridge, you can see the exhaustion front move down the column in real time. Once the colour change reaches the outlet end of the cartridge, the resin is spent and TDS will start climbing again, which is exactly when algae and nuisance diatoms start finding a foothold in reef systems.

Organic-scavenging resins serve a related but different purpose. Something like the BLUE LIFE ORGANIC FX REGENERABLE RESIN targets dissolved organic compounds rather than mineral ions, which is useful for polishing water that already reads low on a TDS meter but still carries yellowing organics or odour. Regenerable resins can be recharged with a salt brine solution rather than discarded outright, which is worth knowing if you are running a larger planted or reef system and topping up daily.

Checking the water, not just the resin colour

Colour change resin gives a visual cue, but a TDS meter at the outlet is still the most reliable check, since resin can exhaust unevenly or channel through gaps in a poorly packed cartridge. Aim for 0 ppm out of the DI stage for reef use, and treat anything above 1 to 2 ppm as a sign the resin needs replacing soon, even if the colour still looks partially active.

Sizing an RO/DI unit for a household is mostly about output volume and the size of your top-up reservoir or auto top-off system. A unit that struggles to keep up with evaporation on a larger reef will leave you refilling containers constantly, so match the membrane's rated litres per day to your actual tank volume and climate. Brisbane summers push evaporation rates up noticeably, which is worth factoring in before undersizing a unit.
