Pocillopora: A Solid Starting Point for Your First SPS Tank

Most reef keepers who want to move beyond soft corals and LPS eventually ask the same question: what SPS should I try first? Pocillopora is one of the most common answers, and for good reason. It is forgiving of minor swings in water quality, grows fast enough to reward patience without demanding perfection, and tolerates a wider band of light and flow than most of its small polyp stony relatives.

Growth Habit: Branching With a Backbone

Pocillopora forms upright branching colonies with thick, verrucae covered arms rather than the fine, twiggy growth seen in some Acropora. This chunkier structure makes it more resistant to snapping in strong flow and easier to frag without shattering. Colonies encrust at the base first, gluing themselves firmly to rock or plug, then push branches upward and outward. Growth rate is genuinely fast under good conditions, with visible extension in a matter of weeks rather than months.

Colour in aquacultured strains ranges from soft brown-green wild types through to the saturated fluorescent green seen in an Aquacultured Ultra Green Pocillopora Frag. That green pigmentation intensifies under higher intensity lighting and stronger flow, so a piece that looks muted under low light can colour up significantly once relocated.

Light and Flow Requirements

Pocillopora sits comfortably in the middle of the SPS light demand spectrum. Aim for roughly 150 to 300 PAR depending on how it is acclimated, with mid to upper tank placement in a well lit system. It does not need the blistering intensity that some Acropora chase, which is part of why it suits tanks running mixed reef lighting rather than a specialised high output SPS rig.

Flow should be strong and turbulent rather than a single laminar blast. Alternating or randomised flow from a wavemaker helps keep detritus off the branches and encourages tighter, more compact growth. In low flow, Pocillopora can still survive but tends to grow leggier and pale.

  • Salinity: 1.025 to 1.026
  • Calcium: 420 to 450 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 7 to 9 dKH, kept stable rather than high
  • Magnesium: 1300 to 1400 ppm
  • Nutrients: low but not zero, some detectable nitrate and phosphate helps colour and tissue health

Stability matters more than hitting exact numbers. A dosing routine using a two part or balanced supplement, tracked with a reliable test kit, keeps swings to a minimum. Many keepers running larger SPS collections eventually move to a dosing pump to automate this consistency.

Where It Sits Against Montipora and Acropora

Difficulty in SPS keeping is not a straight line, but a rough order from easiest to most demanding usually runs Montipora, then Pocillopora, then Acropora. Montipora, including plating and encrusting forms like an Aquacultured 'Bubblegum' Montipora Danae Frag or Aquacultured Red Scrolling Montipora Cap Frag, tends to tolerate lower light and calmer flow than either Pocillopora or Acropora, which makes it a common first coral for keepers stepping up from LPS.

Pocillopora asks for a bit more light and flow than Montipora but is noticeably less fussy about alkalinity stability than most Acropora, and its thicker branch structure shrugs off the occasional flow dead spot that would cause tissue recession in a fine branching Acropora. Acropora generally wants tighter parameter control, higher and more consistent flow, and is less tolerant of detectable nutrients. For someone building confidence, working through Montipora, then Pocillopora, then Acropora is a sensible progression rather than jumping straight to the hardest genus.

Placement and Feeding

Give a Pocillopora frag or small colony room to branch outward without shading its neighbours, and mount it where flow can reach all sides rather than tucking it into a crevice. It draws most of its energy from photosynthesis via its zooxanthellae, but like most SPS it benefits from occasional target feeding of fine particulate coral food during lights-off flow periods.
