Acropora Explained: Named Morphs, Growth Forms and Stability Demands

Acropora is the genus that most reef keepers picture when they imagine a mature SPS tank: dense branching thickets, bright polyp tips, and a wall of colour that only comes from stable, well run systems. Within the genus there are hundreds of named morphs sold under collector names, and understanding what those names mean helps you buy with realistic expectations rather than chasing a photo that may not translate to your lighting.

What a Collector Name Actually Tells You

Names like 'PC Rainbow', 'Walt Disney', 'Fire Truck' and 'Kryptonite' are not scientific classifications. They are trade names attached to a specific genetic line that was originally collected or propagated by a particular grower, often referencing the colour combination or the person who first fragged it. A 'PC Rainbow' Acropora typically shows multicoloured branch tips with blue, pink and yellow tones under strong lighting, while a 'Walt Disney' is prized for its contrasting purple base with bright green polyps. 'Fire Truck' refers to an Acropora rosaria with saturated red-orange colouration, and 'Kryptonite' describes a lime green to chartreuse morph that glows under blue-heavy spectrum.

These names matter because colour expression in Acropora is partly genetic and partly environmental. The same genotype can look washed out under weak lighting and vivid under a well tuned LED fixture, so a named frag is a starting point, not a guarantee of the exact shade shown in a photo.

Growth Forms: Tenuis, Horrida and Millepora

Beyond colour, it helps to know the growth habit of the species behind the name, since this affects placement and long term aquascaping.

  • Acropora tenuis forms compact, tightly branched colonies with short, thick branches. It tends to colour up well under moderate to high PAR and is a reasonable entry point for keepers moving into demanding SPS.
  • Acropora horrida, including violet colour forms, grows with longer, more open branches and fine tubercles along each branch. It generally wants strong, turbulent flow to keep tissue clean and branch tips extended.
  • Acropora millepora produces a rounder, more corymbose colony shape with dense branchlets, and is often one of the faster growing and more forgiving millepora-type SPS for a system that already holds stable parameters.

Placement and Flow

Most Acropora want high light, typically in the upper half to top third of the water column, and PAR in the range of 250 to 450 depending on the specific morph and how gradually the coral has been acclimated. Flow should be strong and ideally turbulent rather than laminar, since Acropora relies on water movement to shed waste and prevent tissue necrosis in tightly packed branch structures. A tank running dual wavemakers on alternating pulse settings suits Acropora better than a single point-source powerhead.

Parameter Stability Above All

Acropora is far less forgiving of swings than soft corals or many LPS. Calcium sits best around 400 to 450 ppm, alkalinity between 7 and 9 dKH, and magnesium around 1300 to 1400 ppm, but the absolute number matters less than consistency. A tank that holds alkalinity at 7.5 dKH every day will outperform one that swings between 6.5 and 9 dKH, even though the second tank's average looks fine on paper. Nitrate in the low single digits and phosphate around 0.03 to 0.1 ppm gives most Acropora morphs enough nutrient availability for tissue growth without driving algae competition.

Temperature stability is equally important. Aim for a tight band, generally 25 to 26 degrees Celsius, and avoid the swings that can come from an undersized chiller or heater cycling hard in a Brisbane summer.

Buying and Acclimatising New Frags

New Acropora frags should be given a slow light acclimation over one to two weeks, starting lower in the tank and moving up gradually, even if the frag was collected from strong lighting at its source. Watch polyp extension daily. Full extension with visible feeding tentacles at night is the clearest sign a new frag is settling in well, while retracted polyps and pale tissue for more than a few days signals the need to check flow and dose stability before moving the frag again.
