Kamoer Dosing Pumps: About Stock

Every reef keeper eventually hits the same wall. Calcium and alkalinity drift because corals are pulling minerals out of the water around the clock, but nobody wants to stand at the tank with a syringe every evening. A dosing pump solves that by moving small, repeated volumes of liquid on a schedule you set once and then mostly ignore. Kamoer has become one of the more common names on Australian reef shelves because the pumps are quiet, reasonably compact, and easy to wire into a wider automation setup.

What a Dosing Pump Actually Does

Inside the unit is a peristaltic pump head. A rotor squeezes a length of silicone tubing in sequence, pushing fluid through without the fluid ever touching the pump's internal parts. That matters for reef dosing because two-part solutions, trace elements and even food-grade additives can be corrosive or sticky over time, and peristaltic design keeps the mechanism clean and the dosed liquid uncontaminated. The Kamoer X4 Pro, for example, runs four independent heads in one housing, so a single unit can handle calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and a trace element blend at the same time, each on its own program.

Setting Up a Daily Two-Part Schedule

Most reefers dosing two-part calcium and alkalinity split the daily target dose into multiple smaller doses spread across the day rather than one large slug. Dosing four to eight times daily instead of once keeps pH and ion swings smaller, which corals tolerate better than one big change. A typical starting point for a 200 litre mixed reef might be dosing calcium and alkalinity solutions at a rate calculated from a test kit reading, then adjusting weekly based on where alkalinity and calcium land on retest. The pump just needs the total daily volume and the number of doses; it handles the timing itself.

Trace elements work differently. Many trace blends are dosed once daily or even every second day in small quantities, since overdosing trace elements is more likely to cause problems than underdosing. Running trace elements through a separate head on the same X4 Pro unit, on its own schedule, avoids any mixing with the two-part lines.

Accessories That Make the Setup Work

The pump itself is only part of the picture. A four pack of coloured dosing lines makes it far easier to track which tube carries which solution, especially once you have four or five lines running off one unit into a sump. It sounds minor until you are troubleshooting at 11pm and cannot remember which tube is alkalinity.

A five tube bracket is the other piece worth planning for early. It mounts the dosing lines in a fixed, tidy arrangement above the sump or dosing container, keeping tubing from kinking, drooping into the water, or tangling around other equipmen when you reach in to top up a reservoir. It is a small bracket but it removes a surprising amount of daily fiddling.

Why Automation Beats Manual Dosing

Manual dosing is fine for a while, but it depends on someone remembering, every single day, at roughly the same time, with roughly the same accuracy. Alkalinity swings caused by inconsistent dosing are a common reason corals stall in growth or develop tissue recession even when every other parameter looks fine on paper. An automated pump removes the human variable. It doses the same amount at the same time whether you are at work, asleep, or away for a weekend, which is exactly the kind of consistency corals respond well to.
