Photosynthetic Gorgonians: Anatomy, Flow and Getting Full Polyp Extension

Gorgonians look like they belong in a different reef entirely. Instead of a hard calcium carbonate skeleton, they build a flexible, horn-like core called gorgonin, covered in a fleshy rind studded with polyps. That skeleton bends in current rather than resisting it, which is the first clue to how these animals actually want to be kept. How gorgonians differ from stony corals

A stony coral like an Acropora grows its living tissue over a rigid, branching aragonite skeleton, and most of its energy budget is split between growth and reproduction. Gorgonians spend comparatively little energy on skeleton, since gorgonin is cheap to produce and flexible rather than dense. That means more of the colony's energy can go into tissue maintenance, polyp extension and, in photosynthetic species, feeding zooxanthellae housed in that tissue. The polyps themselves are usually smaller and more numerous than stony coral polyps, arranged in rows along the branches, and they only look impressive when fully extended. A contracted gorgonian can look like a bare stick. A happy one looks like a soft, feathery fan or bush waving in the current.

Flow: the single biggest factor

Photosynthetic gorgonians come from reef zones with moderate to high, generally unidirectional or gently alternating flow rather than the chaotic turbulence stony coral gardens often get. In the wild, that flow does three jobs: it keeps sediment and detritus off the polyps, it delivers dissolved nutrients and fine particulates for supplemental feeding, and it triggers the polyp extension response in the first place. Many keepers find their gorgonian frag looks retracted and unhappy for the first week or two after introduction, then slowly opens once flow and lighting settle into a pattern. Aim for flow that moves the branches gently without flattening them against the rock. A single point-source wavemaker aimed directly at a gorgonian usually causes tissue rub and dies back over weeks, so broader, more diffuse flow from a couple of directions tends to work better. Lighting expectations

Photosynthetic gorgonians host zooxanthellae, the same symbiotic algae that power most SPS and LPS corals, but they generally come from slightly deeper or more current-swept, shaded reef zones. Low to moderate PAR, roughly in the range you would use for many LPS corals, is usually enough. Blasting a gorgonian with SPS-level intensity right under a metal halide or a reef LED cranked to full power tends to bleach the tissue over a few weeks rather than encourage growth. Mid-tank placement, away from the direct light column and in a spot with good horizontal flow, is usually the safer starting point. Watch colour and polyp extension over the first month and adjust position rather than intensity where possible.

Photosynthetic versus non-photosynthetic species

This distinction matters more than colour or shape when deciding what a gorgonian actually needs. Non-photosynthetic gorgonians, often the more brightly coloured red, orange or purple species, lack functional zooxanthellae and rely entirely on target feeding of fine particulate foods multiple times a week, which makes them genuinely demanding in a typical home system. Photosynthetic species, usually browner, tan or golden in colour, get the bulk of their energy from light and only need occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or fine coral foods to support polyp health, which is why they suit a much wider range of reef tanks. Practical care notes

  • Tank size: comfortable in most established reef systems from around 150 litres up, given adequate flow and swimming room for branches.
  • Placement: mid-water rockwork with open flow on multiple sides, away from direct light blast and away from stinging neighbours that can reach the branches.
  • Water parameters: standard reef parameters, stable calcium, alkalinity and magnesium, since tissue health depends more on stability than on any single number being pushed high.
  • Patience: expect a settling-in period of one to three weeks before full polyp extension becomes consistent.
