PMX8 — Pathogen Mitigation Probiotic

The Problem

Harmful bacteria such as Vibrio, Aeromonas, and other Gram-negative pathogens can establish themselves in aquatic systems before you even see signs of stress in your stock. By the time symptoms appear, the population is already well established.

The Solution

PMX8 is a multi-strain probiotic that uses four distinct natural mechanisms to suppress pathogens — making it extremely difficult for resistant strains to emerge. With eight strains, four kill mechanisms, and a predatory bacterium that actively hunts pathogens, it is the most comprehensive biological defence blend available for aquatic systems.

Four Mechanisms of Action

Chemical suppression — Beneficial Bacillus and Streptomyces strains produce natural antibiotic compounds (lipopeptides, anti-mycobacterial compounds) that break down pathogen cell walls.

Biological predation — Contains Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a living predator that actively hunts, enters, and consumes Gram-negative pathogens from the inside out.

Competitive exclusion — Five spore-forming Bacillus strains outcompete harmful bacteria for space and nutrients, crowding them out naturally.

Immune priming — Rhodotorula yeast provides astaxanthin and beta-glucans, supporting the natural immune response of fish and corals.

What Makes It Different

Most probiotic products rely on a single mechanism. PMX8 delivers four simultaneously. Pathogens cannot adapt to all four at once.

The Microbial Team (8 Strains)

Five Bacillus strains — Broad-spectrum pathogen suppression, enzyme production, biofilm control
Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus — Living predator targeting Vibrio, Aeromonas, and other Gram-negative bacteria
Streptomyces hydrogenans — Targeted activity against resilient pathogens including Mycobacterium
Rhodotorula mucilaginosa — Immune support via astaxanthin and beta-glucans

Dosing

Dose rate adjusted for hobbyist application. The dose rates listed on the BTA website are aquaculture dose rates. The rates below have been adjusted for hobbyist application.

Starting dose: 1 g per 1,000 L at 100,000 CFU — apply once at initial setup or during active challenge.

Maintenance dose: 0.5 g per 1,000 L at 50,000 CFU — apply weekly.

Greater than 135 billion CFU per gram. Zero chemical residues. Reef-safe and display-safe.

Best Suited For

Display tanks, reef systems, aquaculture, hatcheries, and ponds requiring proactive, natural pathogen management — suitable for use as both prevention and during active challenges.
