Quiet Down a Noisy Aquarium Return Pump

A tank in the living room should be a calm thing to sit near. A return pump that hums through the cabinet door is the fastest way to ruin that. The good news is that pump noise almost always comes from one of a handful of causes, and most of them cost nothing to fix. Work through these in order, cheapest first.
1. Vibration through the cabinet
This is the usual culprit. The pump itself is quiet, but it sits hard against the sump or the cabinet floor and turns the whole stand into a speaker. Slip a piece of soft foam mat or a dense sponge under the pump's feet. This single fix solves more noise complaints than everything else combined.
2. Air getting into the pump
A pump pulling in air rattles and gurgles. Check that the intake sits well below the water line and that your return plumbing is not sucking air through a loose fitting. In a sump, a low water level in the pump chamber is a common cause. Top it up and listen again.
3. Hard plumbing carrying the buzz
Rigid pipe bolted straight to the tank transmits every vibration up into the glass. A short flexible section, a length of hose between the pump and the hard plumbing, breaks that path. Browse fittings on the plumbing collection.
4. A worn or dirty impeller
Over months, an impeller picks up coralline buildup or grit, or its shaft wears. Either throws it off balance and it whines. Pull the pump apart, clean the impeller and housing in old tank water or a vinegar soak, and check the little ceramic shaft for chips. A worn shaft is a cheap spare part, not a new pump.
5. The pump itself
If you have worked through everything above and it still drones, the pump may simply be a noisy design. Older AC pumps run louder than modern controllable DC pumps, which spin slower and softer and let you dial the flow down at night. Work it in order
