How Often to Test Aquarium Water: A Schedule for New and Established Tanks

Most people test their water hardest in the first fortnight and then taper off. That is roughly the opposite of what a tank needs. A brand new aquarium wants daily numbers for a few weeks and then almost none. A three year old reef with corals consuming alkalinity wants a weekly rhythm forever. Owning a fish tank gets easier once you know which of those two situations you are in, because the answer decides how many test kits you actually need to buy.

Which numbers actually matter

The full list of things you can measure in aquarium water runs to dozens of parameters. The list that changes a decision is much shorter, and it differs between a freshwater tank and a marine one.

Freshwater tanks

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are the three that keep fish alive. Ammonia and nitrite are directly toxic and should both read zero in a working tank. Nitrate is the harmless end product and is your gauge for whether water changes are keeping up with feeding. After those, pH tells you whether the water suits your stock, and carbonate hardness (KH) tells you whether that pH will hold or drift. General hardness (GH) matters if you keep livebearers, shrimp or soft water species.

Marine and reef tanks

A reef tank adds salinity, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, because corals pull those out of the water as they grow. Phosphate and nitrate become a balancing act rather than something to drive to zero, since corals need a little of both. Ammonia and nitrite matter enormously while the tank cycles and then rarely again. Salinity is the one that catches people out, because evaporation concentrates salt and top-off water dilutes it, so a tank without an auto top-off drifts between readings.

A testing schedule by tank age

Frequency should follow how fast a number can move. Ammonia in a new tank can go from safe to lethal in a day. Magnesium in an established reef barely shifts in a fortnight. This is the schedule the two situations call for.

Two things shorten every interval in that table. One is adding livestock, because a new fish or a batch of frags changes the bioload before the filter has adjusted. The other is changing equipment. Swapping filter media, replacing a skimmer or rebuilding a sump can disturb the bacteria doing the work, so treat the following week like a partial re-cycle and test ammonia daily again.

What a bad reading is telling you

A number on its own is not much use. What matters is the first action it should trigger.

Reasonable targets for a mixed reef are salinity around 35 parts per thousand, alkalinity between 7 and 11 dKH, calcium between 400 and 450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250 and 1350 ppm. Stability inside those bands beats chasing a perfect figure. A tank held steadily at 8 dKH will grow coral better than one bounced between 7 and 11 every week.

Reagent kits, strips or a digital tester

Test strips are the cheapest way to get a number and the least useful way to make a decision. They read in broad bands, they drift once the tube has been opened for a while, and colour matching by eye in warm Brisbane light is guesswork. They are fine for a rough weekly nitrate check on a freshwater community tank. They are not good enough to dose alkalinity against.

Liquid reagent kits are the standard for most owners. Salifert and Red Sea kits are the common marine choice, and API covers most freshwater parameters. Digital colorimeters remove the colour matching problem, which is why they have taken over alkalinity and phosphate testing on serious reef tanks. They cost more per unit and need reagents, and they are worth it for the parameters you test weekly rather than the ones you test twice a year. A handheld checker earns its price on alkalinity long before it does on magnesium.

Salinity is its own case. A refractometer is more accurate than a floating hydrometer and takes seconds, but it has to be calibrated, and an uncalibrated refractometer is confidently wrong rather than approximately right. Test your source water too

Tank water is only half of it. Whatever comes out of the tap is the starting point for every water change you will ever do, and it is not a constant. Treated mains water in South East Queensland varies in hardness and pH by supply zone and by season, so a KH or GH reading taken from your tap in January will not necessarily hold in July.

For a freshwater tank that usually means testing your tap water once, then again if fish behaviour changes for no obvious reason. For a marine tank it means not using tap water at all. Reverse osmosis and deionisation gives you a known blank to mix salt into, and testing the output with a TDS meter tells you when the resin needs replacing. Write the numbers down

A single reading tells you where the tank is. Three readings tell you where it is going, and that is the part that prevents problems. Alkalinity at 7.5 dKH means nothing on its own. Alkalinity at 9, then 8.2, then 7.5 over three weeks means your corals have started growing and your dosing has not caught up.

Keep the log wherever you will actually look at it. A notebook beside the tank does the job. So does a spreadsheet or a phone note. Record the date, the parameter, the number and anything you changed, because the changes are what explain the numbers later. FAQ

Do I need to test water in an established tank that looks fine?

Yes, but far less often. Monthly nitrate and pH on a settled freshwater tank is enough to catch a slow drift before it becomes visible. The tanks that fail suddenly are usually the ones nobody had a baseline for, so there was no way to tell a bad number from a normal one.

How long do liquid test kits last once opened?

Most reagents carry an expiry date and are good for one to two years unopened. Once opened, treat nitrate and phosphate reagents with suspicion after about a year, and store everything out of direct sunlight and away from heat. A kit that has spent a Brisbane summer in a hot cabinet will read low.

Can I skip ammonia testing if I used a bottled bacteria starter?

No. Bottled bacteria can shorten a cycle, but it does not guarantee one, and the only way to know the filter is working is an ammonia reading of zero alongside a measurable nitrate reading. Test daily until you see that combination.

What is the minimum kit for someone setting up their first tank?

For freshwater, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH will cover you. For marine, add salinity and alkalinity, and buy a refractometer rather than a hydrometer. Everything else can wait until the tank is running and you know what you want to keep in it.

Should I test before or after a water change?

Before. Testing after a water change measures your new water more than your tank, which hides the problem you were trying to find. Test first, act on the number, then change the water.
