An established reef tank gets through a lot of salt water. Most keepers change ten to twenty percent every week or two, and every litre of it starts as RODI water with salt stirred in, brought up to tank temperature and checked on a refractometer before it goes anywhere near the display. The mixing takes a few minutes. It is the RODI run, the storage, the wait for a batch to dissolve and stabilise, and keeping the next lot ready, that stacks up across a year of Sundays.

The argument for natural seawater is really an argument about what is in it. Ocean water sits near 35 parts per thousand salinity, calcium around 410 ppm, magnesium near 1280 ppm, with a long tail of minor and trace elements in ratios the sea has held for a very long time. Synthetic salts aim at that profile and the good ones land close, but a salt mix is a formula, and formulas vary between brands and sometimes between production runs. Seawater also carries live plankton and bacteria, which no dry salt can, because you cannot freeze a working ecosystem into a bag. For corals and inverts that react to their water chemistry, the real element ratios and the living fraction are why people reach for it.
There is a second point that gets less airtime. Some synthetic mixes read measurable ammonia or nitrate soon after mixing, which is an odd thing to be adding during a water change whose whole job is to dilute exactly those.
Where natural seawater falls down, and why we test every batch
Natural seawater carries a genuine drawback. Its parameters move with season, location and recent weather offshore, so no two collections are identical, and you cannot assume any given batch is on spec without measuring it. Anyone selling seawater who skips over that is doing their customers no favours. Testing each batch before delivery is how that drawback gets handled, and it is why the service is run by biologists instead of treated as scooping water into a drum. Water that does not test right for a reef does not go out on a run.

Past that you need no RODI unit, no mixing vessel and no second heater, which returns both money and a corner of the garage. On a shop system or a large display running weekly changes, the hours back are usually the reason people switch across.
Whether it earns its place depends on the tank. A nano taking a small monthly top up will not notice the difference. An established reef on regular changes, or a business running several systems, is where delivered seawater does the most work.
