Winter Heater Alert: Check Yours Before the Next Brisbane Cold Night

Act this week: Winter is when aquarium heaters fail, usually overnight when the room is coldest and the heater is running hardest. A stuck or dead heater can crash a tank before morning.

Brisbane nights are dropping into single digits, so your heater is doing far more work than it was a month ago. Older units, cheap thermostats and heaters running near their wattage limit are the ones that give out now. Both failure modes bite: a heater that stops heating lets the tank slide cold, and one stuck on can cook it.

Your winter heater checklist

• Add a second thermometer that does not rely on the heater's own readout, and check it daily.
• Size for the cold. As a rough guide most Brisbane tanks want around 1 watt per litre in winter.
• Run two smaller heaters instead of one large one, so a single failure is not a full crash.
• Keep a spare on the shelf. When one fails you want a replacement that night, not a three day wait.
