The supply itself can switch, not just drift

It is worth knowing how quickly the source can change here. In March 2026 flash flooding shut down the Darwin River Dam pump station, and NT Health issued a boil water alert for Greater Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding areas while the McMinns and Howard East borefields ran at maximum capacity to cover demand. That alert has since been lifted and the dam is back as the primary source.

The lesson for a fishkeeper is not about that specific event. It is that dam water and borefield water are not interchangeable in a tank, and a switch between them can happen over a matter of hours without anyone at your end doing anything. If you keep coral or anything else that dislikes a sudden shift in source chemistry, that is a solid argument for making your own water rather than relying on whatever the network is delivering that week. It is also a good reason to hold enough treated water in reserve to get through a water change you had not planned for.

Heat is the daily problem

Ambient temperature in the Top End pushes tanks up rather than letting them fall, which inverts the usual advice. A heater is close to irrelevant for most of the year; holding a sensible ceiling is the real work. Evaporation runs faster too, so salinity in a marine tank creeps up between top-ups more quickly than it would further south.
