Noise in a reef or planted tank almost never comes from one culprit. It's a stack of small vibrations, a pump humming against glass, a wavemaker ticking on its magnet, water splashing through an overflow, plumbing rattling against a cabinet wall. The scenario
Apartment living room, concrete slab floor, timber cabinetry, tank viewable from the dining table. No garage or spare room to hide a loud sump. The owner wants to watch TV at normal volume with the filtration running in the same room. That rules out anything with a AC induction pump slapping away at 50Hz mains hum, and it rules out loose plumbing that transmits vibration into the cabinet like a drum skin.
The build
- DC return pump. This is the single biggest lever. A quality DC return pump uses a brushless motor and runs at a fraction of the vibration of an old AC pump. - Controller with quiet-hours scheduling. An Apex or similar controller lets you drop return flow and wavemaker output automatically overnight, useful if the downstairs neighbour is on shift work and quiet after 10pm actually matters.
- Aeration handled through the return, not a bubbling airstone. Airstones are cheap but they hiss. If oxygenation is a concern, a well-surfaced sump or a controlled skimmer from the aeration collection does the job without the fizzing sound sitting under everything else.
Before and after
Before: an AC pump running flat out at max flow, a wavemaker ticking every two seconds, plumbing glued rigid to the cabinet, and an overflow splashing into a half empty sump. Total effect, a low but constant background hum you can hear from the kitchen.
After: DC return pump idling at 70 percent with a brushless motor, wavemaker dialled back and mounted with a properly seated magnet, flexible unions absorbing vibration before it reaches the cabinet, sump water level raised to soften the overflow, and a foam mat under the whole chamber. A few extra details that matter
Pump placement inside the cabinet matters as much as the pump itself. Pushing it hard against a cabinet wall or corner amplifies any residual hum through that panel like a speaker box. Leave a few centimetres of clearance and let the rubber feet do their job. Cable ties and loom clips stop power cords from buzzing against glass too, another small noise source people forget until it's driving them mad at 11pm.
